Golden Corral: I am torn. I hate the waste and the gluttony, but I kind of like the spectacle of it - I can think of no better place to people-watch. And, holy cow, they have these coconut chewy things dipped in chocolate ... mmmmmm
And the rolls.
Those rolls are worth the cost of admittance. Except I'm cheap. And lazy.
Behold: the internet knows all the secrets of mankind.
BUT, remember, I'm lazy. I want fresh bread, but I do not want to do all that pushing and folding and mixing and stuff. That's what I have a bread machine FOR.
Except my rolls didn't rise.
(Grrr, pouty face.)
So, I threw some additional warm water, sugar, and yeast together and started the dough cycle again. Then some more flour. And waited some more.
Think it'll work?
Hey, do you know where yeast comes from?
Wonder if there's a recipe for those coconut chocolate things now ...
3 Brilliant Bits of Inspiration:
I'm scared to find out where yeast comes from. I already know where gelatin comes from and can't eat any jello products of any sort because of it. Hello! I am Mormon and they're all about jello. Except me.
Good luck with your newest batch. I over-rose my rolls today too but baked them anyway. They still tasted good even if they didn't look pretty.
Isn't yeast a basic life form.....kinda like bacteria?
Cynthia, as a semi-aspiring vegan, I hate to burst your bubble, but gelatin is in more food items than you think. Like almost all name brand yogurts. And pop tarts. (Not that I like those, you know, but still, when you're stuck at school and you have to eat from the vending machines, well it DOES seem like a better option than say, a candy bar). Marshmallows too. Some frosted cereals (I'll have to check the label on my beloved frosted mini-wheats!). Oh, and I forgot, gummi bears and gummi candies, and skittles and starburst. And, since I take daily meds that are capsules, I'm pretty sure it's in any capsules too (bc I have seen adverts for 'vegan capsules,' as if I have the time/desire/energy to fiddle with my pills.
The list goes on and on.....it gets pretty depressing. Now you see why I gave up veganism and only call myself a "semi-aspiring" vegan.
It's all a matter of cognitive dissonance....avoiding the foods that ook you out (like jello in it's pure state) and eating the ones you like and don't ook you out (or at least you cannot avoid or help liking).
Like I haven't eaten or cooked with eggs since November of 08 when I saw a chicken truck transporting some hens (oof)....but I'm sure they've been in at least some of the cakes I have wolfed down on occasion since then. But I still can't bring myself to handle an egg or eat a forkful of scrambled eggs......
And as for Golden Corral.....I didn't even know it existed until we moved to St. Louis in 2001 and our neighbors (who were from Texas) introduced us. The rolls are good, but unless you are a meat eater, it is a waste of money. Kinda like Fogo de Chao, where I once ate a $32.50 salad. Don't ask.
Brandy---have you also been to the Whole Foods? I hear tell it is the world's largest and I am interested in your review. We have the 3rd largest here in Chicago. I went once here. It was overwhelming. All I got was a gelato from the gelato bar.
