Where to start? The health care system in the US sucks and we all know it.
Don't we all agree that sick people should get the best care possible, as soon as possible?
Do you like pulling your money and insurance card out before you can see a doctor when you have a sick kid late at night?
How are your grandparents doing? My beloved grandmother-in-law just had quadruple bi-pass surgery. Her husband had a hip replaced. Unless you have Gold-Plated Congressional Insurance, these things are very expensive. Not to mention the medicine afterwards.
Can you imagine if, like when you send your kids to school, your house catches on fire, or your naked 3 year old runs away and you have to call the police ... what if money and insurance were not an issue where health care is concerned?
At the very least, we all agree that for children, disabled, veterans, retired people - they deserve the very best health care and preventative care, right and for free?
And then I hear you sigh ... but HOW????
And I just don't understand why we can't take the best of Canada and UK and France and REALLY make it work? SHUT the health insurance companies down. You no longer get to make a profit off denying sick people help, okay? Go buy a casino. Raise my taxes. Do it now, and get my mom a root canal before she loses another tooth.
There is no need to be toothless!!!
Stop with the Socialism scare tactics about no-choice and oh it takes so long and all that muckity muck. STOP being so scared all the time. Be healthy and brave and informed. We have lots of socialized stuff and we LOVE IT (for the most part!!). There are things we need: we need to educate our kids; we need help if our house catches on fire or if some idiot needs arrested.
When we are sick, we need a doctor. Or a nurse. And medicine. It shouldn't be about money, it should be about taking CARE OF EACH OTHER!!!
It DOESN'T have to be one or the other, by the way. The biggest lie we like to believe is that all men are created equal. It's just false, and you know it! But we don't all have to succumb to the lowest denominator. Let those who want to - who can afford to - keep their fancy shmancy insurance cards ... get them in and out and out of our way faster. But ... this is AMERICA!!!! Please. PLEASE. Old people shouldn't be financially wiped out when their bodies start to fail them. Families should not go into severe debt when their kid gets cancer. WE CAN ALL TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER. No more fend for yourself.
If England can do it, we can do it! (that would be my health care plan motto)
Have some compassion. Stop being a greedy, stupid American. We have elected officials who we PAY to write good laws, to protect our rights. I am not sufficiently educated. AND I am busy raising my adorable family. YOU KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT. I don't see why we can't get there???
(Yeah ... I just watch Sicko, Michael Moore, and I think you should, too - it's not a perfect film, sure; plenty of the stats are loaded, but you will die of embarrassment when you see how it is in other hospitals in other countries. DIE. AMERICA is so much better than this - we can be SO SO SO much better - we need to take care of each other!)
And if someone could tell me what to DO ... who to write to and what to say ... I will.

This is poorly researched at best. No one in their right mind should take anything that Michael Moore says as anything more than mindless inflammatory drivel. Any liberal person should be ashamed of that man.
There are many things wrong with the current health care system, but I seriously doubt that creating a Universal Health Care System would make the problem any better.
In addition, I'm pretty sure that my grandmother would also strongly disagree with you on this matter. :)
And, should I have to fork over my own hard earned money to pay for your mother's cosmetic damage? If she can't save up the measly couple hundred bucks to get it fixed, why is that my problem? Maybe she thinks it's a source of pride? Clearly she thinks there are more important things to spend her money on.
I am so on the fence on this one..and not exceptionally educated on the topic, so take my opinion for what it is worth:)
I don't want anyone to suffer. I dont think either side is "pro suffering".
I just have seen government run programs in action and it is not good. In fact, it is pretty scary.
Also, I dont trust politicians to come up with someone fair. They are too self serving.
Have you ever been to the doctor or hospital in England or any other European socialist country? I thought not. It's a scary proposition you propose.
YES YES YES!!!! Oh I have been thinking all of that for the LONGEST TIME!!!! Yes! Stop with the Socialism scare tactics! Yes, take the best of what other co!untries have implemented and do it here. Yes I don't care if you have to raise my taxes a bit to do it, this is REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT!!!! I've got a kid with a half a heart okay, so I am just SCARED at what kind of health insurance she WON'T have when she gets older and maybe needs more surgeries or even a transplant!
Boy you and I are sooo on the same wavelength!
Beacause there is no such thing as something for nothing. There is no free ride. To have the 'best and free' care would mean paying a very steep price in other ways. Our nation is on the verge of economic collapse. My sister is the District Director for a US Congressman so I get a little more of an inside perspective. We'll be lucky to still have a free nation 10 years from now.
As for the 'best of'- people who can afford it, come to the US for healthcare even when they live in 'free' healthcare nations.
I HAVE been to doctors and hospitals in Canada and New Zealand and the UK, and it was fantastic. Certainly citizens other nations have valid criticisms of their programs. They are not perfect. But if we ask them if they'd rather have the US system, the answer would be a resounding NO.
There are so many options that are available that are not being realistically discussed. I'm disappointed that the debate has been so simplistic: nothing versus a public option. Other nations have many other combinations and variations that are successful. In New Zealand, for example, there is a combination of a basic public system and private insurers. People who use the public program have copays to keep costs down and limits on some services. These can be supplemented with private insurance if someone is dissatisfied with the public system. But the presence of the public system keeps people from having total crises and also keeps the costs of private insurance low.
I am happy to see the problems of our current system being openly discussed, but I don't think we've discussed the range of reforms possible.
I agree with Brandy that the "boo! Socialism is scary!" discourse is not productive. Neither is the "The government always screws things up" assumption. The government does somethings much better than private companies, actually, and we should give them credit.
Wow! Thank you so much for this post. I was beginning to wonder if everyone over there had lost their marbles! I am from Idaho but have lived in Australia for 12 years. The health-care system is far from perfect but it is definitely better than allowing insurance companies to run the show. My own parents lost their home over medical bills, so it does happen!! Wake up America! Thanks again Brandy.
The problem is that someone has to run health care and I wish I felt that Washington had my best interests at heart, but... Government officials don't know anything about healthcare, let's not give them a job they are not qualified to do. The bill sounds like medicare for all, which means that doctors won't be able to afford to provide good care.
I hate the health insurance industry. But, where is common sense? Why do we have to throw out the baby with the bathwater? Why can't we just institute some transparency into the system, set new rules on how much cream can be taken from the top and how much has to be invested so that insurance agencies can't declare bankrupcy every time there is a catastrophe. How about that competition between states things and fixing all of the problems with people suing each other. It's not as hard as we're making it!!!!
