The King Jumped the Sponge

I was here, and saw this:

THAT'S why WE almost never watch athletic events in my home.

Meet me at McDonald's!

WAIT! You can get a kids meal for $0.99 when you buy a regular meal? You know, they have apple fries now, for the kids? And you could totally get a side salad with your double whopper with cheese! And a diet coke!

I'm just saying ... $0.99!

(What?! Monday's are free. Anything I get done is double points (I may make it triple this week though). SO, I get to read blogs and write.)

6 Brilliant Bits of Inspiration:

Yeah it's gross and stupid.

But I HATE the Carl's Jr./Hardee's ad with Padma Lakshmi (ex-wife of Salman Rushdie if you can believe it). Especially with the tag line at the end: "More than just a piece of meat." Disgusting.

Really, Salman Rushdie's ex on a fast food commercial (she types as she wikipedia's Salman Rushdie).

Yeah, that British Indian novelist and essayist who first achieved fame with his second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize in 1981.

I love how his style is just like magical realism mixed with historical fiction.

Did you know that a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions and migrations between the Eastern and Western world.

How much were those burgers at Carl's, did you say?

;)

Actually, I highly recommend that you read Haroun and the Sea of Stories....it's an excellent book, a fun read, and even supposedly a 'children's book.'

Overall a highly, highly satisfying book.

Rushdie is most famous, of course, for writing The Satanic Verses, which came out when I was a kid....however, I am not fascinated enough now to actually sit down and read it.

A secondary recommendation, if you like magical realism, is One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez or The House of Spirits, by Isabel Allende. Both are excellent.

BTW, I also replied to the DST thread.....just so you know.

I guess the idea of the commercial is so insulting because previous Carl's Jr. models have included people like Paris Hilton.

Also sooner or later they will probably give Rushdie the Nobel prize (not that he necessarily deserves it).....and that I guess I would like to think that a woman who was married to Rushdie and who is herself a writer would be 'more than meat,' ie she is obviously very intelligent in her own right! Women are NOT objects....are you listening Carl's Jr?!

I mean, not to mention that I find it incredibly insulting that women are even being compared to meat at all....plus I read that Lakshmi was a vegetarian until Carl's Jr. PAID HER to eat the meat for them!!!! YUCK-O

Okay, I've said my piece. Thank you.

Can we just mention here that the stone faced Burger King character is absolutely terrifying, on top of everything else? *shudder*

Dave and I have decided that we can no longer at eat at Burger King or Quizno's, simply because their ads creep us out! I think Carl's Jr. might have to be off the list too, but I've never seen one of their ads so I can keep pretending they're not terrible- the food sure is good (mmmmm guacamole!).
